Welcome to Pen-Y-Cae Surgery

 

Since March 1978 General Medical Services have been provided at the Health Centre in Ebbw Vale.  Dr Simon Donovan took over in April 2005 and the newly established practice was re-named “Pen-Y-Cae Surgery”.

The practice has grown and now has 4 practice partners - Dr Simon Donovan, Dr Della Williams, Dr Sara Evans, & Dr Alison Parry.

Our aims are to provide you with the best possible comprehensive medical service.  All members of the practice team work closely together and are committed to continuity of care for the whole family.

Think 111 First

The Health Board has launched a new campaign to encourage people to ‘Think 111 First’ if you have an urgent healthcare issue and are unsure what to do.

When people call 111 for free help and advice, their symptoms will be assessed and they will be signposted to the right place for their care. The 111 online symptom checker - https://111.wales.nhs.uk/selfassessments/ - is also available to help guide you to the right service.

Please remember that local GP Practices across the Health Board area are open. For any medical concerns, please don’t leave it until you need more urgent or emergency care - contact your GP by telephone or e-consult (via your GP’s website) or visit your local pharmacy for advice.

In a life-threatening emergency, always call 999 or go straight to The Grange University Hospital.

MSK

First Contact Physio (FCP)

First contact physiotherapists (FCPs) are advanced practitioners working within primary care with extensive expertise in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions.

FCPs see patients with (suspected or diagnosed) MSK conditions as the first point of contact, instead of a GP, and can be accessed directly by contacting the practice’s reception.

What do FCPs do during appointments?

  • A typical FCP appointment involves assessment, diagnosis and first-line treatment. FCPs can also refer patients for a course of physiotherapy treatment, order investigations or make referrals into secondary care services using the same pathways as GPs. Some FCPs are also able to independently prescribe and provide injection therapy.
  • As a person-centred service, most appointments include self-management advice, social prescribing, and discussions about physical activity and fitness for work.

About the Save our Surgeries Campaign

General practice is being forced to try and cope with inadequate resources, an unsustainable workload, and a workforce under pressure across the whole of Wales, with some areas in crisis. Burnout and attrition are impacting upon the profession and exacerbating these issues.

Much of the ongoing commentary related to General Practice revolves around access. However, access is merely a symptom of the real issue, which is capacity. Current inadequate capacity in the face of unrelenting demand is a product of longstanding workload, workforce, and well-being issues, which correlate to the chronic underfunding of general medical services.

Our Save Our Surgeries campaign asks Welsh Government to commit to a rescue package for General Practice, to provide GPs and their patients with the support they need.

Notice to patients
Please note that we will be closing the doors to the surgery at 6pm tonight and going forward every evening. This has been agreed with Welsh Government as part of the GMS contract. The surgery will still be contactable via the telephone until 6:30pm.

The online resource offers advice on where to go for a wide range of health and well-being concerns in the Gwent area, from life-threatening illnesses and injuries, to mental health difficulties and minor ailments. Easy to use and accessible 24/7, the tool is available in both English and Welsh, as well as offering an option to translate its contents into more than 100 languages via the ReciteMe assistive toolbar.
